John McDonough, a health care aide to Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) stated at the forum that the Senator is committed to achieving sweeping health reform, and is very confident of its chances for success in the upcoming Congress. Senator Kennedy recently relinquished his seat on the Senate Judiciary committee in order to spend more of his time working on health care reform.

Dr. Mark L. Hayes, the Senate Finance Committee's GOP Health Policy Advisor addressed the need for bipartisanship if a bill is to get passed. He stated that something must be done now rather than later, and that the cost of not acting now instead of in 15 years could be severe, considering that Federal health care spending is growing at a rate that can not be maintained. Similarly, Charles Clapton, the Republican Health Policy Director advised that he also thought health care reform could get done with Republican support. But with the huge deficits facing Congress, the money would have to be reallocated from other needy programs. He said that the Republicans want a system which will emphasize that private plans should be delivering the benefit instead of the government because the private sector could provide the most innovation, unencumbered by government.

Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)'s aide Jocelyn Moore also spoke up at the forum. She stressed that the issues of skyrocketing unnecessary spending, effective preventative care, and affordability should be addressed in the development of a sweeping reform plan. She stated that all options are on the table and that Senator Rockefeller is eager to get started working with the Congressional leadership and the new Administration to accomplish the goal of comprehensive health care reform.

With a reported 475,000 jobs lost in November and employers shedding nearly 700,000 in December, the issue isn't likely to go away any time soon, as large numbers of unemployed workers will undoubtedly be dropping health care coverage out of financial necessity. Congress has its hands full with this issue. We can hope they will work together to find a way to pass some version of the comprehensive universal health care plan which we desperately need.

And, you know what else? I don't know why this is - but I find it so easy to drop any extra weight faster than anyone else I know! And, it's healthy the way my body does it.

However, with injury, illness or disease our joints can be affected in various ways, limiting our abilities and causing stiffness and pain. Physiotherapists are trained to examine joints logically, determine the limiting factors and construct a treatment plan accordingly, with many techniques at their disposal.

A joint is a junction between two bones and in the body our joints have different functions such as force transmission, weight bearing and movement. The symphysis pubis and acromioclavicular joints are examples of force transmission joints, the back is mostly a weight bearing series of joints and the shoulders and knees have to do with movement. The joints we are most familiar with are the synovial joints, the most common type and these have a cartilage lining over the bone ends, synovial fluid secreted by the joint lining and have ligamentous structures surrounding the joint to support its function.



The physiotherapist will initially observe the patient as they make their way into the exam room and sit down. They might limp, splint the joint in some way, have very guarded movement to reduce joint stresses or hold the joint in a protective position to minimise further injury. A history will be taken by the physio initially then they will move on to examine the joint visually, looking for normal alignment, any warmth, effusion or tissue swelling. There may be a fault in a cool joint with no swelling but the physio will have to test it more thoroughly to discover the fault. If the joint is inflamed, hot and swollen then acute treatment should be instituted.

Once the joint has been assessed visually, which takes a very short time, the physiotherapist will move on to palpation of the joint structures which will help identify which parts of the joint are affected. Palpation involves systematically feeling and stressing structures in an anatomical area to pin down faulty structures more closely. Palpation of the joint involves testing the joint line, the insertions of the tendons and ligaments, along the ligaments themselves and around the joint margins. Fluid in the joint is called an effusion and can be thick and sticky, very tight and firm if there is a lot, or movable if the fluid is thin

Passive testing of the joint ligaments is an important part of physiotherapy examination as the ligaments are integral to normal joint function. Ligaments should take the full stress of a persons strength in most major joints without any pain or other problems. Systematically testing the ligaments can identify an injured, painful, stretched or absent ligamentous structure. Muscle testing is done using the Oxford scale of 0-5, taking into account that pain and anxiety may change the muscular force a patient is able or willing to exert. Sensibility and joint position testing can be useful to see if the brain is receiving the correct feedback information it needs from the joint to plan effective and safe movement.

The last part of the examination is to test the joint in functional activities or positions, especially if there is little to find on the more detailed examination. The physiotherapist can see how the patient is willing to use the joint and this may reveal difficulties with joint function which until then have not been clear.

Factors that have a strong influence on the formation of ovarian cysts are:

1.) Genetics - If your mother or a sister has ovarian cysts, you have a higher chance of having it yourself. Research has shown that there is a genetic difference between those who are prone to ovarian cysts and those who aren't.

2.) Insulin resistance - Insulin resistance promotes excessive blood concentrations of insulin. This stimulates the ovaries to overproduce androgens (male hormones) which may induce PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

3.) Weak immune system - A good immune system easily destroys foreign substances in the body. Abnormal cells also get destroyed as well as other agents that stimulate the growth of ovarian cysts.

4.) Poor diet - If you don't feed your body right, it becomes stressed and functions poorly. How does it work?

One can only imagine their results if they combined a sensible diet plan with a regular exercise program.

If weight loss is your goal, these natural compounds show a lot of promise. However, do not expect miracles. A sensible diet and exercise program is always the best way to keep the weight off.

Bronchiectasis - how to manage it well

Bronchiectasis is uncommon. It is a disease of your bronchi or air tubes. They become permanently distorted and then don't work well. It can result in you getting breathless and having a really nasty cough. The cough is often productive of green, purulent sputum, which can, at times be blood stained.

Bronchiectasis can be due to a plethora of causes. The most common is an infection, such an an obstructed pneumonia or whooping cough. Younger people are sometimes affected by a genetic condition, such as cystic fibrosis, which results in them suffering with bronchiectasis. Babies can even be born with it, if their lungs don't form properly in utero.

Before, when there weren't any immunisations or antibiotics it used to be much more common. Although it is probably under reported, the estimates suggest that only about 100 000 Americans have this condition at any one time.

If you were to develop this condition, then you are likely to have suffered from a daily cough, which has lasted a long time (months to years). It would have produced a greenish sputum, although it can also leading to a bloody sputum.

Sometimes patients have less specific symptoms. They may present with difficulty breathing or sharp chest pain. They may wheeze. Some might simply be increasingly tired and losing weight.

Hopefully, your doctor will be suspecting this condition as a possibility. To help them work out what is wrong with you they will need to undertake some investigations. They may ask for some blood tests. They could organise for your sputum to be analysed by the microbiologist to see whether there is an infection there or not. They are likely to organise a chest x-ray and may well consider a chest CT scan.

In general, bronchiectasis tends to deteriorate with time. It can affect both your lung and heart function adversely.

The aims of treatment are to make you feel better, lower the likelihood of further lung problems, help you when your disease gets worse and reduce your chances of dying early.

Whislt your doctor will organise for you to have appropriate antibiotic therapy and physiotherapy, there is plenty for you to do to. You should ensure that you are not exposed to cigarette smoke - certainly not from you and not from others either. Optimise your nutrition - even if you are not hungry. Ensure that you are immunised against respiratory infections - flu, pneumococcus, whooping cough, rubella and measles being the easy ones to organise.

Sometimes your doctor may use inhalers, steroids and oxygen to help your lungs cope better. If you had an infection, your lung disease would get worse and so you should be admitted under a chest physician or pulmonologist for intravenous antibiotics.

Once in a while, cutting out a diseased portion of lung is a viable option. Clearly this is not entered in to lightly, but if you have localised disease and the medicines are helping because your disease is too aggressive, then surgery may be helpful.

Sadly, bronchiectasis can not be cured, but it can be controlled. It requires the patient to carefully adhere to all of the therapy and work closely with the medical team - but it is possible to live well with bronchiectasis.

Cryo kits are available over the counter, or you can make one yourself. Get a can of compressed air, turn it upside down and use it to freeze the soft end of a cotton swab, or a piece of cotton. Other home remedies include using common kitchen and household items. Several kitchen materials may be used as a home remedy for wart growth. Bruised garlic, banana skin, and unskinned potatoes may be used. Simply place pieces of these items directly on top of the wart and hold it in place with duct tape or medical tape. Vinegar, hot water and washing liquid, or salt, are useable items for home remedy for wart problems as well. Instructions for any of these home remedies may differ with individual use.

Be extra careful in applying home remedy for wart especially as to how long it must be applied. And because these home remedies often work differently for different people, get advice as to how you long you should apply the particular home remedy you are using. Some household remedies are potentially dangerous. Garlic can burn the skin around the affected area if left for too long. Incense is sometimes used in Asian countries to burn off warts. If you're using the wrong kind of salicylic acid solution, get ready to dial 911.

Although these home remedies for warts may be effective, keep in mind that these may have its dangers and risks. Some home remedies can be very painful, and could lead to infection and permanent scarring. Because there are no laboratory tests made to support most household remedies, it is difficult to know whether the warts disappear because the remedies work, or if they disappear because your own immune system is more than capable of killing the wart and fighting off the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
